I first got my Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Creative Writing at Northern Arizona University in my home country, the USA. Then I went to Austria and got a TESOL certificate and let me tell you, I learned all about grammar during that time. I enjoyed living abroad so I enrolled in a dual-degree Master’s program in Sociolinguistics and Multilingualism which brought me to Lithuania, Germany, and eventually Sweden.
Have you been able to use learnings from your studies at your work?
Absolutely—especially my creative writing certificate was, I think, a crucial factor in giving me the agency to be creative and think outside the box when it comes to copy. We always want to be clear in what we say to the audience, but how we say it—there are a lot of possibilities there.
What’s your favourite thing about Precis?
You can really feel that everyone who works at Precis wants to continue learning every day. No one is stagnant. And curiosity is highly valued. So it’s very refreshing to feel that if you have a great idea that will bring value to the team, you can say it and implement it.
What’s the best thing about your role?
I would say the ability to be creative and curious without feeling guilty about it. I really have to go in-depth to learn more about a client, an industry, their competitors, their tone of voice, etc. to be able to produce great copy. My role is a lot of writing, learning, and editing. And aligning all of that with the creative strategist’s insights, from the first steps to the final result, is both challenging and motivating.
Could you describe a project that you have enjoyed?
I held a workshop with my team where I presented some insights about copywriting at Precis I’d gathered from conversations with colleagues. During the workshop, I posed a few questions to the creative team regarding my insights. I wanted to spark a conversation around copywriting and design and how we can all work better together. It was a great way to not only get to know my team but also to learn the best ways of working at Precis from the start.
